If I could take a molecular miniaturizer, aim it at the Autobahn and myself in an electric car, I would want Cagey House's Drawing Monsters to be the roadtrip music on offer. These 7 songs, each under 3 minutes, seem to provide a digitized/midgetized version of rock in a world that is still hell bent on making SUV's.
But then to say that this is just an efficient variant of rock sells it short. There is something Bach-like about this music, most notably in the mellower tunes like "The Honey Wasp", "There is a Big Door" and "New Wasp Blueprint". All the parts exist in a distinctly audible space of its own, less an orchestra and more a string quartet.
There's no need for chordal filler here. In "Art Book With Explosions" and "Gizmo Bristles" for example, the bassline has distortion and the melody on top of that is tasty, consequently, everything in between has the same effect if not better, of giving the piece a quality of wholeness.
Lastly, the drum parts are spectacular. I'm not pummeled over the head with bass heaviness, but on the other hand, this album doesn't suffer from digital drum sample anemia. Everything is crisp and in tight syncopation relative to the other parts.
What I'm trying to say is - Damn, what a great album.
